Heinz M. Kaempfer Fund

Introduction

The Heinz M. Kaempfer Fund is associated with the Society for Japanese Arts and established in the Netherlands. The fund aims at promoting studies of Japanese arts and crafts and the publication of those studies, especially amongst younger scholars.

The Heinz M. Kaempfer Fund was founded in 1989 and is named after the late Heinz M. Kaempfer (1904-1986), former secretary and chairman of the Society for Japanese Arts. From the 1950s onwards Kaempfer was an active and important figure in Japanese art in the Netherlands, involved in a number of the Society's publications and exhibitions. On his 75th birthday the Society honoured him with the publication of an important collection of articles "A sheaf of Japanese papers. In tribute to Heinz Kaempfer on his 75th birthday" to which many scholars from all over the world contributed.

Activities

Projects supported by the Heinz M. Kaempfer Fund in the past have included a biennial essay contest and various publications. A more recent initiative is the organisation of an annual Kaempfer lecture, the first of which was held in 2004.

The Kaempfer Lecture

The Kaempfer Lecture of 2005 was part of a special event on July the 2nd at the Leiden National Museum of Ethnology commemorating the centenary anniversary of the birth of Heinz Kaempfer (1904-1986). It was dedicated to Japanese illustrated books, a genre within Japanese art so much appreciated and cherished by Heinz Kaempfer. Dr. Roger Keyes and Prof. Dr. Matthi Forrer presented a talk on illustrated books and their memories of Heinz Kaempfer.
